Our story

A Studio Built for Wonder

Creativity should feel joyful, personal and full of possibility

Violet’s Crayon is a mixed-media art studio in Whitehouse Station where kids, teens and adults can explore imaginative materials, learn new techniques and make something that feels completely their own.

The Violet’s Crayon experience

Art With More Room to Explore

We offer enough guidance to help each artist feel confident—and enough freedom for personality, curiosity and creative choices to lead the way.

Materials With Possibility

Paint is only the beginning. Texture, stones, shimmer, collage, miniatures and dimensional details invite experimentation.

Guidance, Not Sameness

We teach useful techniques without expecting everyone’s finished piece to look identical. Personal choices are part of the experience.

Welcoming at Every Age

Little artists, tweens, teens and adults all deserve creative experiences that feel thoughtful, engaging and made for them.

Something Worth Keeping

Our projects are designed to be more than a way to pass the time—they become art, keepsakes and memories guests feel proud to take home.

Meet Lisa Kettell

A Lifetime of Creativity, Brought to the Studio

Violet’s Crayon was founded by Lisa Kettell, an artist, author and educator who has spent decades turning curiosity, storytelling and unexpected materials into imaginative art.

Lisa began building her creative business in the 1990s and became an early blogger and online-shop pioneer. Her work has appeared in more than 250 publications worldwide, reaching millions of readers and makers. Along the way, she has taught nearly 1,000 workshops, spoken at more than 65 venues and collaborated with over 100 creative-industry brands.

At the studio, that experience becomes something personal: warm guidance, real artistic techniques and the confidence to try an idea without worrying about doing it “the right way.” Lisa’s goal is for every guest to leave feeling more creative than when they arrived.

Lisa is the author of Altered Art Circus, a guide to mixed-media techniques, and the author and illustrator of the children’s book Star and the Milky Way Café. She holds both a BA and an MBA.

The story behind the name

Inspired by Violet. Created for Everyone.

Violet’s Crayon is named for Lisa’s youngest daughter, Violet, whose imagination, joy and creative spark helped inspire the studio’s creation.

That spirit lives in everything we do: welcoming curiosity, celebrating personal ideas and making space for creativity to feel playful and meaningful at the same time.

This is more than an art classroom. It is a place for a child discovering a new material, a family making something together, an adult returning to creativity, friends sharing an experience and a group celebrating something special.

There is a seat at our creative table for you.
